The Recording King brand was created in early 1920 as a home brand for the American department store Montgomery Ward. Mass production did not exist yet and all the instruments were hand-made. The highlight was in the 1930s when the development in the field of resonators, banjo's, and other folk instruments made a big step forward. Many of the contemporary models are based on the designs from that time. Well known models of the then are now the best-selling models. For example the RM-993-VG Resonatoror the Open Back Banjo.
