Hollow body or solid body guitar?

Hollowbody guitarsgive you classic looks and tone and are perfect for jazz and blues. These are usually equipped with 2 humbuckers that provide a full sound. In conjunction with a fixed bridge or a bigbsy tremolo. This guitar is often equipped with a 3-position pickup switch. To make different combinations between the elements. Be careful with trips into harder genres. Hollow bodies are less defined and more sensitive to feedback (feedback). Solidbody guitars actually come in many forms. And in many different configurations. The biggest difference from a hollowbody is that the guitar is more compact. And often a bit more ergonomic. For example, there are many 7-string 8 and even 9-string models available in this group

Cheap and expensive electric guitars

The difference between expensive and cheap models is in the workmanship and material costs. The most important thing for a beginner is that the guitar does what it is supposed to do. Especially game-wise and to the level of the player. A middle class guitar, for example, already gives you better elements. Nicer fretwork and more stable wood. Do you look at the high end models. Then there is really nothing more to improve in terms of specifications. Think of more beautiful and stable woods, beautiful hardware and good elements. Then it just all adds up.

Beginners guitar

Buying an expensive electric guitar as a beginner can be inspiring and motivating. But do realize that because of your experience you don't really know why it is actually so good. He must be good enough to have fun. And to stay enthusiastic so that you can move forward. When we think of high end, we often think of the American models. But nowadays, amazing guitars are also being built in Indonesia, for example. These offer you the same but for a lot less money.

Element configurations

When purchasing it is important that the guitar matches your personal music taste. In terms of looks and sound. My explanation of element configurations below will give you an idea. About strengths in terms of sound. Being happy with your instrument on all fronts is important. It inspires and motivates. Note that a guitar with a tremolo system, such as a Floyd Rose for a beginner which is inconvenient. Because you cannot just change these to a different key.

Common element configurations are.

Singlecoil –singlecoil –singlecoil:

Perfect for sparkling cleans and bluesy and funky sounds. Think Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Eric Johnson. Provides many sound options by means of a 5-position switch. And therefore makes it very versatile.

Humbucker –singlecoil –singlecoil:

Slightly more versatile than the above. Mainly because this configuration also adds the tight rock sound of the humbucker. This also gives you many sound options by means of a 5-position switch. And therefore makes it very versatile.

Humbucker- Humbucker:

A bit derived from the famous Les Paul set up with 3-way switch. Gives a full, tight sound in a solid body guitar. Perfect for blues rock, hard rock and heavy metal. Think Gary Moore, Metallica, Guns and Roses. By using split humbuckers, a 5-position switch is also used regularly. To get more switching options.

Humbucker single coil humbucker:

Invented by guitarist Steve Vai. This configuration actually gives you the best of everything. By splitting the humbuckers with the 5-way switch, you can go from a nice warm twangy clean to a tightly defined humbucker sound.

Humbucker / single - lipstick

This configuration is best known from the telecaster but comes in many variations. The telecaster sound is clear with a bite and full at the same time. And usually has a 3-way switch. Its sound is best known for the Roling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, for example. And legendary country guitarists like Danny Gatton, Brad Paisley

Common terms

  • Frets: are the metal strips on the neck that determine pitch
  • Solid body: Is the name for an electric guitar with a body made from a solid piece of wood
  • Hollow body: Is the name for an electric guitar that is hollow on the inside of the body
  • Pick ups : is the collective name for all magnetic elements (microphones)
  • Neck : that's the neck / stem of the guitar, it comes in many shapes and materials
  • Tremolo: A tremolo is a steel bridge that can change the pitch of the strings by hinging.
  • Fixed bridge: actually means that it is not a tremolo bridge. These are perfect for people who like to switch moods.
  • Fretboard: is the wood on the neck where you place your fingers, the frets are also placed here. Usually maple or rosewood is used for this
  • Rosewood: in Dutch rosewood fretboard is wood with a slightly warmer tone
  • Maple: maple translated into Dutch. Often used as a neck. And as fretboard wood because of its super strong properties. Sound is a bit brighter on the fretboard than pallisand

Even more specifications

  • Alder: Alder, translated into Dutch, is often used as body material. Provides the recognizable Fender sound.
  • Mahogany: mahogany translated into Dutch. Widely used for the necks and bodies of the heavier rock guitars
  • Sustain: is the pitch of the guitar. a nice combination of body & neck. Can give a good sustain due to the good materials and connections.
  • Humbucker: is a high output double coil cartridge. Which generates little or no interference
  • Single coil: is a single coil element that is less intense. And a little brighter than the humbucker
  • P-90: is a larger single coil element. Ever developed by Gibson. This one sounds a bit fuller than its smaller brother
  • Floyd rose: is as they call it a floating tremolo with which you can bend the strings up and down. In these systems, the nut is often replaced by a locking nut. This clamps the strings at the nut just before the machine heads. So that the guitar is not out of tune with heavy use. For minor tuning changes, there are fine tuners on the tremolo itself. Nice system, but not if you want to change mood a lot
  • Active: stands for guitars featuring pickups with a built-in preamp. These are often fuller and more defined than passive elements. They work on a 9 volt battery. Think of brands like EMG and Fishmann

History of electric guitar

The electric guitar was born in the early 1930s out of sheer necessity. The bands got louder and the halls fuller. There had to be a way to get that guitar harder without such a clumsy microphone. A magnetic element was placed under the strings. For example, an electrical signal could be generated by vibrating the strings. The amplifier then converted this to the respective guitar sound. As soon as there was experimenting with building solid guitars. The so-called solid body's. The big advantage of this was that production costs were lower. And basically anything was possible. And well, that closet wasn't necessarily necessary anymore. It was a turning point for the guitar and all the musical movements that followed. We went from jazz to rock & roll and from Disco to Heavy metal. And everything in between
