Dunlop History
Jim Dunlop worked as a mechanic when he founded The Jim Dunlop Company as a part-time business. His first product was the 'Vibra-Tuner', a small tuning device that could be taped to the guitar via a suction cup. For example, it could control the mood of a guitar through the vibrations a small straw. The ancestor of clip-on voting machines that are hugely popular today. After this initial success, he was told that there was still no good Capoand that the one who could make a decent capo for a 12-string guitar would probably get rich. Thanks to his technical background, he also succeeded. So his business grew and it started to grow too big for his garage, after which he moved to Benicia California, where the headquarters still stands today.
From Accessories to Effects
After proving himself once again as a brilliant accessories producer with the introduction of nylon, Jim Dunlop started working on his company full time. Now was the time to focus on electronic components and effects. The one that will be best known was the Dunlop Cry Baby wah-wah pedal. The name was taken from Thomas Organ / Voxand the sound had already surfaced in several places, so it wasn't completely original. But it's to be said that Jim Dunlop perfected it. Almost every guitarist is familiar with Jimi Hendrix's use in songs like Voodoo Child (Slight Return). In addition to the Wah, Dunlop also bought up the rights to the Heil High-Powered Talk Box in 1988, a special guitar effect that must be controlled by mouth. The most famous example of this effect is Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer.
Dunlop's empire
Dunlop's success ensured that many other companies joined the group and also emerged within it. The stupidbox effects of Way Huge And MXRboth would probably no longer exist without Dunlop's support. But also the accessories department that started it all has not stood still. In the meantime, the range consists of everything from capos, slides, plectra, strings, cords and guitar maintenance products. For everything you're looking for for your guitar, Dunlop has a solution.
