Mr. Tanaka is a versatile and successful man. He is successful as a flutist/musician and was a good and smart engineer and businessman. Mr. Tanaka first had contact with the British flutist William Bennet in 1977. Soon the two found out that they both had a penchant for the whistling of Louis fate. This was a well-known flute builder from France who lived from 1807 to 1896. With William Bennet's help and knowledge of that whistling style, Tanaka got to work. He developed a flute based on the classic/vintage construction of Louis Lot, among others, but put on a modern look. The first flute under the brand name Altus was released in 1981.
In the years after the first flute came out, interest and demand grew for altus flutes. Tanaka designed a building in the Japanese Alps. Here he could work undisturbed and in an inspiring environment. This building is where to this day all flutes are made by hand.
